What Is Protein?
Protein is one of the three major macronutrients found in food, alongside carbohydrates and fat.
It is found in many foods, including eggs, fish, meat, dairy products, beans, lentils, soy foods, nuts, seeds, and grains.
But protein is more than a number on a nutrition label.
To understand protein properly, it helps to look at three things:
What protein is, what it does, and what comes with it when we eat a protein-containing food.
That last part is easy to overlook.
Two foods can provide protein while having very different amounts of fiber, fat, sodium, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
So when comparing protein-containing foods, the better question is not always:
Which food has more protein?
Sometimes, it is:
What else comes with the protein?
What Is Protein Made Of?
Proteins are made from smaller building blocks called amino acids.
The body uses amino acids to build its own proteins. There are more than 20 amino acids involved in protein production, and nine are considered essential amino acids because they need to be obtained from food.
These amino acids are used in many different proteins throughout the body.
This is why protein is considered an essential macronutrient rather than simply another number on a food label.
What Does Protein Do?
Protein contributes to the structure and maintenance of tissues throughout the body.
It is also used to make substances such as enzymes and other proteins involved in normal body processes. Protein is particularly important for maintaining and repairing muscle tissue.
In simple terms, the protein we eat provides amino acids that the body can use to build and maintain its own proteins.
That does not mean that eating more protein automatically means better health.
Protein needs vary between people, and the food providing the protein matters too.
Which Foods Contain Protein?
Protein is found across a wide range of foods.

The nutritional profile can be very different from one food to another.
For example, lentils provide protein together with fiber, while nuts provide protein alongside considerable amounts of fat. Milk provides protein along with other nutrients as part of its overall food profile.
So looking only at protein doesn’t tell us everything about a food.
Animal Protein vs. Plant Protein
Animal Protein
Common sources include:
- Eggs
- Fish
- Meat
- Poultry
- Milk
- Yogurt
Many animal foods provide all nine essential amino acids in meaningful amounts and are commonly described as complete protein sources.
Plant Protein
Plant sources include:
- Beans
- Lentils
- Soybeans
- Tofu
- Nuts
- Seeds
- Some grains
Individual plant foods can differ in their amino-acid profiles. However, a varied diet containing different plant protein sources can provide the essential amino acids needed by the body.
Some plant foods, such as soy and quinoa, are also complete protein sources.
The practical lesson is simple:
Variety matters.
There is no need to think of plant protein as automatically inferior simply because individual plant foods can have different amino-acid profiles.
What Does “Complete Protein” Mean?
You may come across the terms complete protein and incomplete protein when reading about nutrition.
A complete protein provides all nine essential amino acids.
Many animal foods are complete protein sources. Some plant foods, including soy and quinoa, can also provide all nine essential amino acids.
However, looking at a single food in isolation can sometimes make nutrition seem more complicated than it needs to be.
Different foods contribute different nutrients to an overall diet.
That’s why variety can be more useful than trying to identify one “perfect” protein food.
Does Every Food With Protein Count as a Protein Food?
Not necessarily.
Many foods contain some protein, but that does not mean protein is their main nutritional characteristic.
For example:
Oats contain protein, but they are also an important source of carbohydrates and fiber.
Peanut butter contains protein, but it also provides substantial amounts of fat.
Milk provides protein together with other nutrients.
This is why it can be more useful to think about the whole nutritional profile of a food rather than placing a food into a category based on one nutrient.
Why Protein Amount Alone Can Be Misleading
Imagine two foods that each provide the same amount of protein.
At first glance, they might appear nutritionally similar.
But one could also provide:
- More fiber
- More unsaturated fat
- Different vitamins and minerals
while another could contain:
- More sodium
- More saturated fat
- Added ingredients
The two foods can therefore have very different nutritional profiles despite providing a similar amount of protein.
This is the idea behind what Harvard’s Nutrition Source calls the protein “package”: when we choose a food for its protein, we are also choosing the other nutrients that come with that food.
Protein quantity is only part of the picture.
A Simple Protein Package Comparison
Lentils
Protein + fiber + carbohydrates + micronutrients
Eggs
Protein + fat + vitamins + minerals
Nuts
Protein + unsaturated fats + fiber + minerals
Fish
Protein + fats + vitamins and minerals
None of these foods needs to be reduced to a simple label such as “good” or “bad.”
They provide different combinations of nutrients and can play different roles in an overall eating pattern.
That is a more useful way to think about food than creating a ranking based on protein content alone.
How Much Protein Do You Need?
There isn’t one protein intake that is appropriate for every person.
For healthy adults, the Dietary Reference Intake framework uses 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day as the Recommended Dietary Allowance. Individual needs can vary depending on factors such as age, activity level, life stage, and individual circumstances.
For example, a person’s protein needs may be different depending on their body size and physical activity.
People with particular health conditions or nutritional requirements may also need individualized guidance from a qualified professional.
So a general reference value should not be interpreted as a personal prescription.
Is More Protein Always Better?
Not necessarily.
Protein is important, but more isn’t automatically better.
A person’s diet also needs to provide other nutrients, including carbohydrates, fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
More importantly, increasing protein by choosing different foods can produce very different nutritional outcomes.
For example, getting additional protein from beans, fish, nuts, tofu, eggs, or processed meat does not create the same nutritional package.
This is why looking at protein quantity together with food quality and the overall eating pattern is more useful than simply chasing the highest protein number.
What About Protein Powders?
Protein powders can provide a concentrated source of protein.
They can be made from sources such as:
- Milk proteins
- Eggs
- Soy
- Peas
- Other plant sources
Some products also contain additional ingredients such as sweeteners, flavorings, vitamins, minerals, thickeners, or other additives.
If you choose to use a protein powder, looking at both the Nutrition Facts and ingredient list can tell you more than the protein number alone.
The same principle applies:
Look beyond the protein number.

How Much Protein Does It Provide?
This tells you about quantity.
What Else Does It Provide?
Look at fiber, fats, carbohydrates, sodium, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
How Does It Fit Into the Meal?
A protein-containing food is normally eaten alongside other foods.
How Does It Fit Into the Overall Eating Pattern?
One food does not determine whether an entire diet is balanced.
This broader approach gives you more useful information than a simple “highest protein wins” ranking.
Protein in Everyday Food Choices
Protein isn’t something that only belongs in gym diets or protein shakes.
It is already present in many ordinary foods.
A breakfast might contain protein from eggs or yogurt.
A lunch might contain protein from beans, chicken, tofu, or fish.
A snack might contain protein from nuts or dairy.
A dinner might include legumes, fish, poultry, tofu, or another protein-containing food alongside vegetables and grains.
The important point isn’t that every meal must contain a particular protein source.
It is that protein is naturally part of many different foods and eating patterns.
The Simple Takeaway
Protein is a macronutrient made from amino acids and found in a wide variety of foods.
It provides amino acids that the body uses to build and maintain its own proteins and support normal body functions.
Protein can come from both animal and plant foods, and different sources provide different combinations of nutrients.
That’s why the most useful question isn’t always:
“How much protein does this food have?”
It can also be:
“What else comes with the protein?”
Once you start looking at the whole nutritional profile of a food, nutrition labels and food comparisons become easier to understand.
And that is a more useful way to think about protein than simply chasing the biggest number.
