What Is Fiber?
Fiber is a type of carbohydrate found naturally in plant foods that the human body does not fully digest.
It is found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds.
But “not fully digested” does not mean fiber is unimportant.
Different types of fiber can interact with the digestive system in different ways.
Some fibers can hold water. Some can form a gel-like substance. Some can be fermented by bacteria in the gut.
This is why it is more useful to think of fiber as a group of different substances rather than one single nutrient that behaves the same way in every food.
Why Is Fiber Different From Other Carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates include sugars, starches, and fiber.
Many digestible carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which the body can use for energy.
Fiber behaves differently because the human digestive system cannot completely break it down.
Instead, different types of fiber can:
- Add bulk to material moving through the digestive tract
- Hold water
- Slow digestion
- Be fermented by gut bacteria
- Affect how quickly some nutrients are absorbed
The effects depend on the type and characteristics of the fiber.
So when you see “fiber” on a nutrition label, you’re looking at a nutrient category that includes several different types.
The Two Common Types of Fiber
You may have heard of soluble fiber and insoluble fiber.
These terms describe how fiber behaves in water.
Soluble Fiber
Soluble fiber dissolves in water and can form a gel-like material.
It is found in foods such as:
- Oats
- Barley
- Beans
- Lentils
- Apples
- Berries
- Chia seeds
- Some nuts
Some soluble fibers can be fermented by gut bacteria. Certain types can also influence digestion and the absorption of nutrients.
Insoluble Fiber
Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water in the same way.
It is found in foods such as:
- Whole-wheat products
- Wheat bran
- Brown rice
- Some vegetables
- Nuts
- Seeds
- Fruit skins
Insoluble fiber can add bulk to stool and help material move through the digestive system.
But Fiber Is More Complicated Than “Soluble vs. Insoluble”
The soluble-versus-insoluble classification is useful, but it doesn’t explain everything about how fiber behaves.
Fiber can also differ in characteristics such as:
- Whether it forms a gel
- Whether it is fermented by gut bacteria
- How quickly it moves through the digestive system
- How much water it can hold
For example, some soluble fibers are highly fermentable, while others are not.
Some fibers can act as food for certain gut microorganisms.
So two foods that both contain “fiber” can have different characteristics because their fibers are not necessarily identical.
This is one reason why simply looking at the total fiber number does not tell the whole story.
Where Does Fiber Come From?
Most naturally occurring dietary fiber comes from plants.
Fruits

Vegetables
Examples include:

Why Does Fiber Matter?
Fiber can influence several parts of the digestive and metabolic system.
One of the most familiar roles of fiber is supporting regular bowel movements.
Some fibers absorb water or add bulk to stool, which can help material move through the digestive tract.
Other fibers can be fermented by bacteria in the gut.
These fibers can contribute to the environment in which gut microorganisms live and can be used to produce substances such as short-chain fatty acids during fermentation.
Certain types of soluble fiber can also affect how quickly food is digested and may help moderate increases in blood glucose and cholesterol.
The important point is that fiber does not have just one job.
Different fibers can behave differently.
Fiber and the Gut
The relationship between fiber and the gut is one of the reasons fiber has become such an important topic in nutrition.
Some gut microorganisms can use certain fibers as a food source.
These fibers are sometimes described as prebiotic fibers.
During fermentation, gut bacteria can produce short-chain fatty acids and other compounds.
However, this does not mean that every type of fiber behaves identically.
Nor does it mean that one particular “gut health food” is necessary.
A variety of plant foods can provide different types of fiber.
That’s one reason dietary variety matters.
How Much Fiber Do You Need?
Fiber needs vary depending on factors such as age and sex.
As a general reference, adults are commonly advised to consume around 25 to 30 grams of dietary fiber per day, although specific recommendations vary by age and sex.
A single number should not become the only goal.
A diet containing a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds can naturally provide different types of fiber.
So instead of asking:
“How can I hit exactly 30 grams of fiber?”
a more useful everyday question may be:
“How can I include more fiber-rich plant foods throughout my day?”
Is More Fiber Always Better?
Not necessarily.
Increasing fiber suddenly can cause digestive discomfort for some people, particularly when large amounts of certain fermentable fibers are introduced quickly.
Gas and bloating can occur when fiber intake increases rapidly.
This is why gradually increasing fiber intake can be more comfortable than making a dramatic change overnight.
The source of the fiber matters too.
Getting fiber from a variety of whole or minimally processed plant foods also provides other nutrients.
So the goal shouldn’t simply be:
Maximum fiber.
It should be:
A varied diet that regularly includes fiber-rich foods.
Whole Foods vs. Fiber Supplements
Fiber supplements can provide concentrated amounts of specific fibers.
Examples include products containing psyllium or other isolated fibers.
These products can have useful applications, but they are not the same thing as eating a wide variety of fiber-rich foods.
Whole plant foods can provide:
- Fiber
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Different types of carbohydrates
- Plant compounds
- Other nutrients
For this reason, fiber supplements should not automatically be viewed as a replacement for a varied diet.
The food itself matters.
Does Cooking Change Fiber?
Cooking can change the physical structure and characteristics of foods, but it does not simply “destroy all the fiber.”
The amount and properties of fiber can vary depending on the food and how it is processed or prepared.
This is another reason not to think about fiber as a simple on/off nutrient.
A cooked vegetable can still be a useful source of fiber.
Likewise, processed foods can sometimes have fiber added to them, but the nutritional profile of the entire food still matters.
How to Add More Fiber to Your Meals
You don’t need to completely change your diet to include more fiber.
Small changes can help.
Breakfast
Try adding:

- Chia seeds
- Nuts
Lunch
Consider:
- Beans or lentils
- Vegetables
- Whole-grain foods
Snacks
Options can include:
- Fruit
- Nuts

You could include:

The goal isn’t to find one “superfood.”
It is to create more opportunities for different plant foods to appear throughout the day.
A Better Way to Think About Fiber
Fiber is often presented simply as:
“Eat more fiber.”
That’s useful, but incomplete.
A better way to understand fiber is to ask four questions.
What Type of Fiber Is It?
Different fibers have different characteristics.
What Food Does It Come From?
A whole food provides more than just fiber.
How Does the Fiber Behave?
It may hold water, form a gel, add bulk, or be fermented by gut bacteria.
How Does It Fit Into the Overall Diet?
One high-fiber food doesn’t make an entire diet healthy.
The variety of foods you eat matters.
Fiber in Everyday Food Choices
Fiber doesn’t have to be something you calculate at every meal.
It can simply become part of everyday food choices.
A breakfast might include oats and berries.
A lunch might include vegetables and beans.
A snack might include fruit or nuts.
A dinner might include vegetables, lentils, or whole grains.
Over time, these choices can add different sources of fiber to the diet.
The goal isn’t to find one perfect fiber source.
It is to build variety.
The Simple Takeaway
